R N/mm 2 – Mechanical resistance of the material to drill. HV – Twist drill hardness according to the Vickers scale: the higher the value, the higher the hardness of the material.

GUIDE TO TWIST DRILLS WITH CYLINDRICAL SHANKS Rolled twist drills – Twist drills obtained from a hot-rolling manufacturing process. Good-quality twist drills, for use for light-duty jobs, e.g. drilling of iron, mild steel, light alloys and nonferrous metals in general. Ground twist drills – Twist drills obtained entirely from grounding from a heat-treated steel bar. High-performance twist drills, for drilling steel and light alloys: constant efficiency, excellent chip removal and drilling precision. HSS – High-speed steel, extremely hard, and resistant to high temperatures; the best material for cutting, tapping and threading tools. Cobalt (Co) – A base alloy element, providing steel with improved heat resistance, and decreasing twist drill wear, e.g. at high temperatures. The higher the cobalt content, the better the performance of the tool. The most commonly used alloys have a 5% or 8% cobalt content. HSS-Co – High-speed steel with a 5% or 8% cobalt content. TiN – Ultrathin titanium nitride coating; based on its high hardness and low friction factor, it provides increased resistance to wear and oxidation and improved drilling chip removal. Chrome steel – Tools made from chrome steel are suitable for manual use for threading of iron, light alloys, untreated steel and steel heat-treated at low hardness. They are widely used for cleaning and repairing damaged threads in all professional jobs in general, and in the automotive sector in particular. Hard metal – Material with high wear resistance, used for plates in masonry drill bits. 118° sharpening – Standard sharpening angle of twist drills for metal, allowing quick drilling into metals, for easier centring and excellent heat dissipation. 130° sharpening – Wide sharpening angle, providing more precision in early drilling operations and requiring less drilling force. Double 115°/135° sharpening – Combined benefits of the two angles, plus chip breaking function; the best choice for long chip materials.
